Transit Mixers and Batching Plants

The transit mixer is the final and often underappreciated link in the concrete production chain — responsible for delivering freshly batched concrete to the job site without segregation or premature setting.

Inside a rotating drum, the mixer continuously agitates the concrete during transport, preventing hardening and material separation. Drum speed is adjustable — slower during transit to maintain the mix, faster during discharge to ensure complete and efficient unloading.

Fleet sizing should be planned jointly with plant capacity and average job site distance. For example, a 90 m³/h plant serving sites roughly 20 minutes away typically requires 8 to 12 transit mixers to maintain continuous production flow; this number rises as delivery distances increase.

Concrete generally needs to be discharged within 90 to 120 minutes of mixing, depending on temperature and admixture use — exceeding this window risks workability loss. Efficient route planning and awareness of traffic patterns are therefore essential parts of fleet management, not afterthoughts.

GPS tracking systems, now standard in many modern ready-mix operations, allow real-time monitoring of transit mixer location, optimize delivery scheduling, and provide transparent updates to clients awaiting delivery. Efficient fleet management directly affects both customer satisfaction and the overall operational efficiency of the plant.
